To ring in the holiday season, RaiseMe is celebrating #12DaysOfKindness. Each day, we’ll feature a new high school student doing outstanding work to serve their communities. Today’s spotlight is on Gabrielle R., a high school sophomore from Oakland, CA, who helped empower the voices of incarcerated women by sharing their poetry.
Here’s what Gabrielle shared about her community service experience:
What is your act of service?
I acted as teen assistant at a camp with the Oakland Zoo serving developmentall disabled children
Can you share your favorite memory from this act of service?
I had a five-year old camper, who would come up and check to see if my hands were cold, and if they were, he would try his best to warm them up.
What’s one lesson you’ve learned from your service experience?
I learned that children have such a big capacity for kindness. They are always so quick to lend a helping hand, no matter who it is, and that in itself is a beautiful thing.
